Le Sous-Marin Espadon

Moored in the port of Saint-Nazaire, the submarine Espadon is an emblematic collector's item at the Saint-Nazaire Ecomuseum. Commissioned in 1960, she made history in 1964 by becoming the first French Navy submarine to dive under the ice pack, during an extraordinary scientific and military mission.

Today, the tour invites visitors to relive this exceptional episode through an immersive journey. Inside the submersible, everything has remained in place: engine room, operations center, officers' quarters, bunks and torpedo room. An audio-guided tour immerses visitors in the sounds and sounds of the ship, giving them a close-up view of the daily lives of the 65 crewmen who lived and worked in this confined space.

The scenography emphasizes the human experience. Sounds, stories and testimonies accompany the progression inside the submarine, allowing us to understand the living conditions, the rigors of the missions and the indispensable solidarity on board. Each compartment recounts a facet of the submariner's profession, between technology, endurance and commitment.

The tour lasts around 30 minutes and can be booked in advance. Due to the narrowness of the premises, the number of visitors is deliberately limited to ensure the comfort and quality of the experience. During the summer months, we recommend that you visit in the morning, or anticipate a waiting period.
