Packing list and survival kit for a bike trip

The cyclist's checklist to make sure you forget nothing!

Setting off on a bike trip means, above all, NOT overloading yourself. But it still takes some equipment. Clothing, hygiene, bike gear: it is not always obvious which essentials to bring. We have prepared a checklist of what not to forget, so you can travel freely on La Vélodyssée!

A. STAPF

Bike:

Travelling by bike means having equipment suited to your trip. The essentials are:

  • waterproof panniers or a trailer to carry your belongings
  • a helmet for your safety
  • a lock to protect your bike when you stop
  • a multi-tool for small repairs along the way
  • a spoke key to repair spokes, and possibly spare spokes
  • lights for riding at night, so you are as visible as possible

Of course, this checklist is not exhaustive: adapt it to yourself and your needs! You will also find bike repair shops all along La Vélodyssée.

Comfort:

After a day of cycling, it is essential to be comfortable, especially if you choose to camp. Remember to bring:

  • a tent for nights under the stars
  • a sleeping bag liner for extra warmth
  • a sleeping bag suited to the weather conditions
  • a sleeping mat for a restful night
  • an inflatable pillow for extra comfort
  • cutlery, a pocket knife, a water bottle, a stove and a gas canister for tasty meals outdoors

Clothing:

Cycling for several days means taking several outfits. We recommend bringing:

  • two short-sleeved T-shirts
  • two long-sleeved T-shirts
  • a rain jacket or windbreaker
  • a fleece
  • sunglasses
  • trousers
  • shorts
  • an outfit for town
  • comfortable trainers

It also depends on the season you will be travelling in and your planned activities. In that case, think about bringing swimwear, hiking shoes and summer shoes!

Hygiene:

Stay comfortable by bringing the basic hygiene items:

  • soap
  • a solid shampoo bar
  • a microfibre towel
  • sun cream
  • a toothbrush and toothpaste
  • a deodorant

Remember to bring a first-aid kit with plasters in particular. We hope you won't need it, but you should have one with you for minor scrapes.

Survival kit: the right habits before you leave

Repair equipment

A good puncture repair kit is the basis of any bike trip. Without taking everything, remember: a pump (or two), puncture patches, oil to lubricate the chain, a spare inner tube (or two), a spoke key and possibly spare spokes. In case of a major problem, find out about the bike repair shops along La Vélodyssée.

Put comfort first

Choose comfortable clothes and don't forget a waterproof or windproof jacket, even in summer. Also think about toiletry essentials: travelling by bike doesn't mean neglecting your well-being.

For transport

If you don't have your own bike, see the list of rental shops along La Vélodyssée.

  • a bike suited to your route
  • a comfortable saddle
  • a helmet for your safety
  • waterproof panniers to protect your belongings

If you didn't know where to start, we hope this list has guided you before you begin your trip on La Vélodyssée. It is not exhaustive and can of course be adapted to everyone's needs. Remember too that you will probably do some shopping during your trip: if you have cloth bags, this is the time to use them (see our article Tips for being a responsible, committed bike tourist)!
