The Maison des écrivains de la mer was founded by René Moniot-Beaumont. The aim of this cultural site is to bring together and showcase maritime literature. Each year an exhibition devoted to a written theme from the world of the sea is held here.

This museum, library (some books can be borrowed), reading room and interpretation centre opened its doors in 2005. It is located right in the heart of Saint Gilles Croix de Vie, on the edge of the square Loïc Rostu and not far from the famous Tour Joséphine. Here you'll find books by authors from France and elsewhere who have been inspired by the maritime world.

More generally, this house is dedicated to all writers, friends of seafarers, ships, ocean voyages and literature.

Once again, under the "Quart de Nuit" label, you'll find lectures exploring a theme linked to maritime or literary life. Over a hundred evenings have already been scheduled at the Maison des Écrivains de la Mer.

The two 2026 exhibitions:
-On the port la Vie website: "When piracy inspires comics".
We could have entitled the exhibition "When Pirate Movies Influence Comic Strips", because cinematographic productions and blockbusters such as "Pirate of the Caribbean" have left a lasting mark on the forms and aesthetic visions that enrich the palette of the "Pirate" myth.
However, pirate mythology has always inspired comic strips. There's nothing surprising about that. The number of publications or series is surprising. There are adaptations of novels, biographies and original series covering every era of piracy, whether contemporary or ancient.

-At the Maison des écrivains de la mer: "À l'abordage, Quand la piraterie inspire la littérature" (Boarding, when piracy inspires literature)
"Emerging in the Mediterranean during the Hellenistic period, piracy quickly spread to all the seas of the world, reaching its peak in the Caribbean in the XVIIᵉ and XVIIIᵉ centuries - the time of the mythical Turtle Island - before running out of steam in the XIXᵉ century.
Tolerated and hunted, feared and admired, pirates became legendary figures, whom literature transformed into heroes.
Blackbeard, L'Olonnais, Morgan, Anne Bonny and Mary Read are just some of the names we still remember.
Unscrupulous adventurers, beggars thirsting for wealth or daring precursors of egalitarian societies, pirates have spanned the centuries without ceasing to fascinate".
